Story Behind the Art:
Pottery of this type is made in Safi, Morocco, a fishing town on the Atlantic coast of Morocco. Safi is known as one of the centers for this art and utilizes red clay to create the ceramic pottery. Clay is softened by hand, and formed using a potter’s wheel which is powered by foot, using age old techniques. Pieces are dried in the sun then baked in kilns that are over 200 years old. All items are hand-etched and painted.

The artisans live comfortably but modestly. Most do not own automobiles but are able to walk to work due to the close proximity of their homes to the medina (center of town). Within the medina, there is a souk (market) where most of the artisans work. This is also the center of trade for each city. Most families live with their extended families. In speaking to a Moroccan artisan, one will find that he/she is very proud of their art form. If the father is an artisan then the son will almost always learn the father’s trade. It is important to keep the craft in the family.
